Liaisons in French phonetics is the appearance of a final non pronounced consonant in the first syllabe of the following word (usually starting with a vowel). The consonant and the vowel merge. In the verbo tonal approach, it is fundamental for a good appropriation of the right pronunciation.
There are liaisons with :
Ils arrivent (pronounced /Z/)
un grand homme (pronounced /t/)
mon aventure (pronounced /n/)
Il y a beaucoup à faire (pronounced /p/)
un léger incident (pronounced /r/)

LIAISON IS COMPULSORY :
- Between the article and the noun : (les, aux, des, ces, mes, tes, ses, un, deux, trois, …)
Ex: les amis, mon ami, cet été…
2. Between the adjective and the noun :
Ex : les petits enfants, trois hommes dans un bureau…
3. Between the personal pronoun and the verb :
Ex: Ils ont mal, vous aimez danser ?, elle les a rencontrés.
4. Between the adverb and the adjective : (très, moins, mieux, plus, bien, trop, …)
Ex: C’est très aimable...
5. In fixed expressions :
Ex : Les Etats-Unis, de temps en temps, de plus en plus, comment allez-vous ?
6. After prepositions ‘en’, ‘dans’, ‘chez’, ‘sans’, ‘sous’ :
Ex: dans un an..
LIAISON IS FORBIDDEN :
- After the consonant following the ‘r’ :
Ex : Le nord-est, elle court # assez vite.
- Before the aspired « h »:
Ex : Des # haricots, des # héros, en # haut, le # huit…
- Before the following words :
Ex : Onze, oui, yaourt, yoga, un
- After the word « et » :
Ex : Toi et # elle, Elsa et # Édouard.
- After a noun :
Ex : La maison # est grande / une maison # immense
- Après the interrogatives « quand », « combien », « comment »
Ex : Quand # êtes-vous partis ?
- In an interrogation when the subject personal pronoun is inverted:
Ex : Qu’a-t-on # envoyé ?
